Sometimes I like to invent quotes.

"As a writer I am often put to the question 'What do you do for a living', and just as often am pressed by a polite duty to answer. 'Oh, I write.' Then they will go a step further to ask the blatantly obvious question: 'Write what?', to which I am drawn to spar with the equally inevitable: 'Whatever I damn well feel like.' Except that seems to upset them, so I have been led to rethink my conversational habits. On advice of a similarly troubled colleague, I've deduced the simplest way to satisfy their quietly suffocating curiosity is to answer bravely, with a broad smile, 'Oh, I'm a real good liar.' And that's the truth, isn't it?"
